The CAP program merges multiple designs into a single chip. The mask and fabrication NREs are the same as they have always been. But in this case, they are shared between multiple chips. This lowers the NRE for each chip. Comparing a CAP run to an ASIC is similar to comparing a commercial passenger jet to a private jet. Both will get you to where you want to go. But the passenger jet is much cheaper, since you are sharing the costs with all of the other passengers. |
